Hi Erik! Jim is right if you are interested in SSB work as it is nearly
impossible to convert from AM to SSB (at least cost prohibitive).
However, there are a lot of 10 meter FM repeaters around the globe and
they can be a lot of fun. I just converted a small CB to install in my
van for a local 10 meter repeater that I am putting up. It only cost a
few bucks, and the conversion to FM from AM was very simple. Look in the
Ham mags and you'll see a company called CBC International. They
specialize in CB to 10 meter conversions and have all the goodies that
you need and instructions, too. Good luck es 73 de WB4IUY

Subject: Desperately looking for logging program for Mac
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
: What I am looking for is a logging program
: for the Macintosh which can help me printing QSL-labels,
: help me count how many different DXCC countries I have,
: and do other "smart" things.
: I think it is very boring writing QSL cards, but it has
: to be done. hi.
Congratulations on your operation.
First of all, I personally have used only TWO logging programs written
for the Macintosh - neither of which will totally satisfy you.
The first is QLOG - a general purpose logging program which was written
using Fox-Base and is painfully slow and I do not know if it is even
being supported. Last I heard, it was still be offered by:
ZCo. Corporation
P.O. Box 3720
Nashua, NH 03061-3720 USA
Please be aware that I have repeatedly tried to contact these people and
even sent an SASE - but without response. However, recently another ham
in that area called them and was told that they still sell QLOG, but are
not actively marketing it.
---------
My personal favorite is the Marathon contest logging program for the
Macintosh written by Kevin Krueger N0IOS. If he would put a "DXpedition"
mode in it and possibly a utility to print QSL labels, we would be in
"fat city". ;-)
For more information on Marathon (and I am a very staunch supporter of
this s/w - but have no financial interest), contact:
Kevin Krueger N0IOS
1780 Ruth Street
Sain Paul, MN 55109 USA
I suggest that you also send along your e-mail address since he "may"
be able to respond quicker.
Good luck & 73

Here's more to worry about: why capitalize
MF, HF, VHF, UHF, CW, AM, FM, SSB, D-layer, E-layer, F1-layer, F2-layer
(and why no A- B- or C-layers?), .....
Any difference in specs between a 2N2222 and a 2N2222A xsistor? (And why
did I capitalize the N and A?) An xmtr I'm building calls for 2N2222A's
but all I have are dozens of 2N2222's (from dumpster diving behind
the Engineering Department's building - amazing what they throw out).
I imagine the `A' version is the new and improved model.

We are coming into the low part of the cycle...10M will not be a good DX band
again until about 1999. That's not to say that you can't work any DX, but
openings to Europe or Asia will be very rare. Openings to the South are still
fairly common, though. 73 de John/AA2DY

Subject: Noise figure/transistors
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Hi,
Here's a design question. I am looking at the front-end RF amp
which uses a 2N3904 and asking myself if I were to replace this with a
transistor with a lower noise figure, say a 2N5179 or BF689, will I see
any improvement? Is this mod worth pursuing? How much improvement can I
expect to see here?
Tks.

such a law here. You need to provide more information as it sounds like
someone has told you something that is simply not true.

Well, if by no longer employed by them you mean unemployed, then you have
plenty of time to hop on a plane and get here in time for this weekend.
It won't be as if you have someplace to be.

Subject: Voice mail on a repeater?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I think voice mail on a repeater would be a good thing as soon as the
hams using that system had automatic unit ID equipment installed.
One could easily do that by transmitting a burst of 9600 bps AX.25
packet - a UI frame or equivalent - at the beginning of each
transmission. You'd never have to say your callsign again, and the
repeater could automatically tell you if you had voice mail.
Using touchtones would be stupid and annoying.
